Is Bakuchiol Safe Long Term? Everything You Need to Know

You've started using bakuchiol and you love the results. But is it safe to use indefinitely? Here's what we know about long-term bakuchiol use — and why the outlook is very positive.

What We Know from Traditional Use

The Psoralea corylifolia plant, from which bakuchiol is derived, has been used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for over a thousand years. While traditional use isn't the same as clinical evidence, it does suggest that the plant compounds involved don't carry obvious long-term toxicity risks — otherwise they wouldn't have persisted in medicinal traditions for centuries.

What We Know from Modern Research

The most rigorous modern clinical trial on bakuchiol (the 2018 British Journal of Dermatology study) ran for 12 weeks. While this doesn't tell us about decades of use, it showed no negative effects on skin health, barrier function, or systemic health during that period. Critically, unlike retinol, bakuchiol doesn't thin the skin with long-term use — a known concern with extended retinoid therapy.

No Dependency or Tolerance Issues

Unlike some other skincare actives, there's no evidence that skin develops a 'tolerance' to bakuchiol over time (requiring ever-increasing doses to see the same effects). You don't need to cycle off bakuchiol the way some experts suggest doing with retinol. Consistent daily use appears to continue delivering benefits over time.

A Practical Note

As with any skincare ingredient, if you notice unusual irritation, changes in your skin, or develop a new skin condition, discontinue and consult a dermatologist. But for healthy skin with no contraindications, bakuchiol appears to be one of the safest anti-aging ingredients available for long-term daily use.
