A vegan hair oil nourishes, smooths and protects hair using only plant-derived oils, with no animal ingredients and none of the silicone-heavy fillers that coat hair without feeding it. The category is friendlier to vegans than most, because the best hair oils are pressed straight from plants, argan, jojoba, castor and coconut, but a few formulas still slip in silk proteins, lanolin or honey for slip and shine. The bigger mistake people make is not veganism but application: too much oil, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, which leaves hair greasy instead of glossy. This guide covers what to check on the label, which plant oil suits your hair goal, and exactly how and when to use each type, from pre-wash treatment to finishing shine.

What makes a hair oil vegan?

Most single-origin oils are naturally vegan, but blended formulas and shine sprays are where to look twice. Scan for:

  • Silk protein and silk amino acids: added for slip, derived from silkworm cocoons.
  • Lanolin: wool wax, occasionally used in rich hair balms.
  • Honey and beeswax: found in some smoothing and styling oils.
  • Dimethicone and heavy silicones: not animal-derived, but they coat hair and can build up; many people seeking a plant based oil want to avoid them too.

A genuinely plant based hair oil relies on cold-pressed botanical oils and plant-derived vitamin E. For the wider label method and what vegan keratin means, see our vegan hair care guide.

The same plant oils that feed hair also work on skin. Our multi-oil All-In-One Facial Oil and richer Nourishing Facial Oil double as a smoothing treatment on very dry ends, and our vegan face oil guide explains the comedogenic ratings behind them.

How and when do you use hair oil?

  1. Pre-wash treatment. Massage a richer oil like coconut or castor into dry hair 30 minutes before shampooing, then wash out. This is the deepest form of conditioning.
  2. Scalp massage. A few drops of rosemary or jojoba oil worked into the scalp two to three evenings a week, as covered in our thinning-hair routine.
  3. Finishing shine. The smallest amount of argan oil smoothed over dry mid-lengths and ends tames frizz and adds gloss. Start with less than you think.
  4. Never oil the roots for shine. Finishing oil belongs on the lengths only; on the roots it just looks greasy.
  5. Warm it in your palms first. A quick rub between the hands helps the oil spread evenly instead of landing in one patch.

Frequently asked questions

Is argan oil vegan?

Yes. Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree, entirely plant based. The same is true of jojoba, castor, coconut and rosemary oils.

Will hair oil make my hair greasy?

Only if you use too much or apply it to the roots. A few drops on the mid-lengths and ends adds shine without grease; the pre-wash treatment is rinsed out, so it never sits on the hair.

Can I leave hair oil in overnight?

A pre-wash oil can be left on for 30 minutes up to overnight before washing. Leave-in finishing oils are different and used in tiny amounts on dry hair, not saturated overnight.

Does rosemary oil really help hair?

Rosemary oil is the most evidence-supported botanical for the scalp, and the massage itself boosts circulation. It is supportive care that rewards consistency over months, not an overnight fix. Our detailed review covers the research honestly.

Should I put hair oil on wet or dry hair?

Both work for different jobs: a light oil on damp lengths helps seal in moisture, while a finishing oil on dry hair controls frizz and adds shine. Pre-wash treatments go on dry hair before shampooing.
