Double cleansing means washing your face in two steps: first an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, SPF and excess oil, then a water-based cleanser to lift away sweat, grime and any leftover residue. It gives a genuinely clean face without stripping, and it is most useful in the evening if you wear makeup or sunscreen. In the morning, one gentle cleanse is usually enough.

In this article: what double cleansing is, whether you need it, how to do it in two steps, who should and should not, oil vs water cleansers, and an FAQ.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-part method that came out of Korean and Japanese skincare and is now a mainstay everywhere. The logic is simple chemistry: oil dissolves oil. Makeup, sunscreen and the sebum your skin produces are oil-based, and a water-based face wash alone often cannot shift them fully. So you use an oil or balm cleanser first to break all of that down, then a gentle water-based cleanser to remove whatever is left and leave skin fresh. The result is a thorough clean that is gentler than scrubbing at stubborn makeup with a single harsh wash.

Do you actually need to double cleanse?

Not always. It depends on your day.

  • Yes, in the evening, if you wear makeup, use sunscreen (which you should), or have oily or congestion-prone skin.
  • Probably not in the morning. Overnight your skin only accumulates a little sebum, so one gentle cleanse is plenty.
  • Maybe not at all if you have very dry or reactive skin, wear no makeup, and use minimal SPF. In that case a single gentle cleanse can be right.

Double cleansing is a tool, not a rule. Matching it to your actual routine matters more than doing it because it is trendy.

How do you double cleanse, step by step?

  1. First cleanse (oil or balm), on dry skin. Massage an oil-based cleanser over dry skin for 30 to 60 seconds to melt makeup and SPF. Add a little water to emulsify, then rinse.
  2. Second cleanse (water-based). Follow with a gentle foam, gel or cream cleanser to remove residue and any last traces. Massage, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  3. Pat dry and continue. Leave skin slightly damp and go straight into your toner, serum and moisturiser to lock in hydration.

Two things to get right: keep the water lukewarm, not hot (hot water strips the barrier), and be gentle. The point of double cleansing is to be thorough without aggression.

Oil cleanser vs water cleanser: what is the difference?

They are two halves of the same job. The oil step removes what water cannot; the water step removes what oil leaves behind.

Removes Makeup, SPF, sebum, pollution Sweat, dirt, leftover residue
Texture Oil, balm or cleansing milk Foam, gel or cream

Who should not double cleanse?

If your skin is very dry, sensitised or you have a compromised barrier (tightness, flaking, stinging), twice-daily double cleansing can be too much and may leave you feeling stripped. The same goes for anyone with an over-cleansing habit already. For those cases, keep double cleansing to evenings on makeup or SPF days only, choose non-foaming, fragrance-conscious formulas, and always follow with hydration. If in doubt, less is more.

Does double cleansing help with breakouts and blackheads?

It can help indirectly. Thoroughly removing SPF, makeup and the day's oil means less to clog pores overnight, which supports clearer skin and fewer blackheads over time. It is not a spot treatment, though. Pair a gentle double cleanse with the right targeted actives rather than expecting cleansing alone to clear congestion.

Frequently asked questions

Is double cleansing necessary every day?

Only in the evening, and mainly if you wear makeup or sunscreen. Most people do best with a double cleanse at night and a single gentle cleanse in the morning.

Can double cleansing dry out your skin?

It can if you use harsh, foaming products or do it twice a day on already-dry skin. Choose gentle, non-stripping cleansers and follow with a moisturiser to keep the barrier happy.

What comes first, oil or water cleanser?

Oil first, on dry skin, to dissolve makeup and SPF. Then the water-based cleanser to remove residue. Doing it in reverse means the oil-based grime never fully lifts.

Can I use micellar water as my first cleanse?

Yes. Micellar water is a good low-effort first step to break down makeup, followed by a gentle water-based cleanse. A dedicated oil or balm tends to remove heavy makeup and SPF more completely.
