A complete vegan skincare routine follows the same logic as any well-built routine: cleanse, tone, treat, moisturise, and protect in the morning; cleanse, treat and nourish at night. The vegan part is not a different order of steps, it is making sure every product in that order is free of animal-derived ingredients, from the glycerin in your cleanser to the collagen in your night cream. This guide lays out the full morning and evening sequence, explains which steps are essential and which are optional, and links to our detailed guides for choosing the right vegan product at every single step.

What does a vegan skincare routine look like?

Here is the full map. Essential steps are marked; everything else is an upgrade you add when your skin asks for it:

Step Morning Evening Essential?
Cleanse Light single cleanse Double cleanse on makeup or SPF days Yes
Tone Hydrating toner Hydrating or balancing toner Optional
Treat Hydrating or vitamin C serum Bakuchiol or peptide serum Optional
Eyes Light eye cream or caffeine gel Richer eye cream Optional
Moisturise Day cream Night cream, plus face oil if dry Yes
Protect Mineral SPF, every day Not needed Yes

Three steps are non-negotiable: cleanse, moisturise, protect. Everything else is personalisation. And remember that vegan and cruelty-free are separate claims to verify; our guide to the difference between vegan and cruelty-free skincare shows how to check any product in 30 seconds.

When you are ready to add a treatment step, our guide to choosing a vegan face serum matches serum types to goals, and the vegan eye cream guide does the same for the eye area.

The evening routine, step by step

Nights are for removal and repair. Start with a proper cleanse: if you wore makeup or sunscreen, do a first pass with micellar water or a cleansing oil, then follow with your regular wash. Our vegan face wash guide helps you pick the right texture for your skin. After toning, this is the slot for renewal actives such as bakuchiol or peptides, followed by a night cream. Dry or mature skin can seal everything with two or three drops of oil as the final step; the vegan face oil guide explains how to choose one by comedogenic rating. And skincare does not stop at the jawline: your body wash and hair care deserve the same vegan scrutiny as your face products.

How do you add actives without irritation?

  1. Nail the basics for two weeks first. Cleanse, moisturise and SPF daily before adding anything else.
  2. Introduce one active at a time. Give each new product two weeks so you know exactly what your skin likes or dislikes.
  3. Split strong actives across the day. Vitamin C in the morning, bakuchiol or exfoliating acids in the evening, never all at once.
  4. Exfoliate weekly, not daily. One or two acid sessions per week keeps skin bright without wrecking the barrier.
  5. Patch test everything new. A few evenings on the jawline is cheap insurance.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps does a vegan skincare routine need?

Three at minimum: cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. A full routine with toner, serum, eye cream and oil is a refinement, not a requirement, and more steps only help if each one is chosen deliberately.

Should my morning and evening routines be identical?

No. Mornings end with sunscreen and favour antioxidants like vitamin C, while evenings skip SPF and make room for renewal actives like bakuchiol. Cleanser, toner and moisturiser can be the same products in both.

In what order do serum, oil and moisturiser go?

Thinnest to thickest: water-based serum first, then moisturiser, then facial oil last, because oil seals everything beneath it.

How long until a new routine shows results?

Hydration improves within days, texture within a few weeks, and concerns like fine lines or uneven tone need six to twelve weeks of consistency. Judge a routine at the three-month mark, not the three-day mark.

Does a vegan routine need different steps than a regular one?

No, the steps are identical. The difference is verifying that each product is free of animal-derived ingredients like collagen, beeswax, lanolin and carmine, which takes seconds once you know the label names to scan for.
